Dozens of people lined up outside of Kavanagh Liquors, a store that has had several multi-million dollar winners, to purchase Powerball tickets in hopes of winning the estimated record-breaking $1.5 billion dollar jackpot.

For every US$1 worth of Powerball sales, 50 per cent goes to prizes, 40 per cent to causes such as education, and 10 per cent to retailers who sell the tickets and other administrative costs, Grief said.

Each of the three winning tickets is worth $528.8 million, the California Lottery said. The Powerball jackpot for Wednesday night’s drawing is estimated to be more than $1 billion, the largest lottery jackpot in the world.

An eye-popping and unprecedented Powerball jackpot whose rise to $1.6 billion became a national fascination will be split three ways.

After the announcement, at the Chino Hills, CA 7-Eleven, an excited crowd gathered – perhaps to wait for a victor to arrive, or just to share in the excitement that the jackpot victor is among their neighbors.

A California Lottery official said a winning ticket was produced in the state. Both drawings did not produce a matching ticket.

The Powerball lottery is played in 44 U.S. states, Washington D.C., and two U.S. territories: Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The winning numbers were 8, 27, 34, 4, 19 and the Powerball number 10.

Lottery executives say ticket sales reached record levels, generating more than US$1 million an hour in Texas alone in the final build-up to the draw. The store will receive a $1-million bonus for selling the ticket. The winners’ identities remain a mystery, but they bought their tickets in Florida, Tennessee and a Los Angeles suburb where even lottery losers were celebrating Thursday that such heady riches were won in their modest city.

Early Wednesday evening, we were out at The Lotto Mart at Liberty Gas Station, across from the Columbus Civic Center were folks were optimistically awaiting the largest jackpot ever.

Wednesday night’s drawing was the 20th since the last time someone matched all six numbers.
