Officers were at the scene of the wreck when a Greyhound bus carrying about 40 people struck the disabled SUV. The other occupant of the SUV was airlifted to hospital.
The crash happened about 5:30 a.m. on the westbound highway near Center Street. 16 passengers from the bus were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
A woman in the vehicle was killed; a man was hospitalized with unspecified injuries.
It was not clear if the deceased woman was the driver or passenger in the vehicle. The bus driver was being interviewed by both police and Greyhound officials.
Gipson said the cause of incident had not yet determined and the company was cooperating fully with the local authorities.
Gipson said another bus picked up the remaining passengers to take them on to Amarillo.
