1 dead, 3 wounded in AZ campus shooting

The injured were transported to hospital, but their condition is unknown, said Cindy Brown, the university spokeswoman.

The Mountain View Hall dormitory where the shooting took place houses the “majority” of students participating in fraternities and sororities, according to the school website. Many stated that it was disrespectful to the memory of the deceased student, claiming that it gave students no time to mourn the loss of one of their own. He loved to play lacrosse and wanted to be successful so he could help other people, said his cousin, Ryan Jernegan of Woodbury, New Jersey.

Northern Arizona University officials say campus police had the suspect in an early morning fatal shooting in custody within two minutes of first word of the incident.

Jernegan says he and Brough were close growing up and reunited during a chance meeting in Las Vegas in June.

One person died and three others were wounded in the shooting.

A few students said that they had been up all night, fielding calls and texts to friends and family members across the country to keep them informed on the situation.

A shooting at Northern Arizona University that killed one student and wounded three others began as a fight between two groups, police have said. Jones said he shot them both but then tried to help one of them.

Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, who lives in Flagstaff, expressed confidence that the city “will only grow stronger in hard moments like these”.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the victims, as well as the entire community in Flagstaff”, the fraternity said in a statement.

The suspected gunman, 18-year-old Steven Jones, surrendered to officers, said police chief Greg Fowler.

Representatives from the Delta Chi fraternity’s national organisation said its members were involved in the confrontation but did not have information about the victims.

She says the first police calls of the gunfire came in at 1:20 a.m. PDT Friday.
