1 dead as protests for caste benefits turn violent in India

After the Jat reservation turned violent yesterday rampaging mobs had held some policemen captive besides setting ablaze the house of state’s Finance Minister Abhimanyu and several government and private properties in Rohtak, Jhajjar, Hansi and several other parts of the state.

Curfew was imposed in Jind district as protesters set a railway station on fire. Shoot-at-sight orders have also been issued in the violence-affected areas. Meanwhile, protesters in Sonipat too uprooted the railways tracks on Delhi-Ambala railway line, said sources. The decision to send the paramilitary personnel by air was taken by the Home Ministry following a request of the Haryana government.

Several trains have been cancelled and Indian Railways bore an estimated loss of Rs 200 crore. The agitation has also affected crushing operations of the co-operative sugar mills in Jat-dominated areas of Rohtak, Meham, Gohana and Sonepat.

“The Delhi CM has directed DJB to approach the apex court immediately to seek an urgent hearing as water crises may prevail if supply is not made normal at the earliest”, said a senior government official. “One person who was critical has been operated upon and his condition is now stable”, they said.

Rohtak/Chandigarh: Army personnel were airlifted on Saturday to Haryana’s violence-ridden Rohtak town after Jat protesters dug up roads to block the entry of military units.

Mobile internet services have been suspended indefinitely on Friday by Rohtak administration in Rohtak and Jhajjar following violent protests on Thursday by Jats in Haryana demanding reservation in authorities jobs and academic establishments underneath OBC class. The community has started protesting for the same, and the protests entered the sixth day on Friday. “They came near the Circuit House and damaged the vehicle of the DIG, two police Gypsys and set on fire a police Tavera vehicle”, the DGP said.

Bus services on Hisar-Chandigarh, Hisar-Delhi, Hisar-Jaipur, Hisar-Bhiwani routes and other places also remained suspended.

“Some roads are blocked by the protesters”.

“I appeal to all my fellow Haryanvis to maintain law & order in the State, and ensure that harmony is maintained in society”, he tweeted. “Many youths who take part in these meetings are influenced and then they move towards major towns and cities to join other protesters”. As per an estimate, about 10 lakh vehicles including trucks have been stalled at the roads leading to Haryana, which also reach the other neighbouring states.

Jat leaders have said that the agitation would continue till their demand was met.
