NECN reported that New Hampshire State Police said the accident occurred at 7 p.m. on Route 16 near the ME line.
Authorities did not identify the Secret Service agents and would not say who they were assigned to at the time of the crash.
Danforth died at the scene, and his two passengers and the agents were taken to local hospitals with serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.
It wasn’t immediately known in what capacity the agents were working, but Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was campaigning in a town hall meeting Tuesday night in Berlin, north of Wakefield.
The driver of a Mercury Sable crossed into the oncoming lane and hit the Ford Taurus carrying the Secret Service agents, NBC said.
Tuesday’s deadly collision underscores the dangers – to Secret Service agents and others – of a job that requires crisscrossing the nation to protect politicians and foreign dignitaries.
The Secret Service did not immediately respond to inquiries on Wednesday morning.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
