One person has died and at least 19 others are injured after two buses collided in Newark, New Jersey, Friday morning.

A bus driver was found dead when medics arrived, an EMS source tells PIX11. “Me and a couple of other guys start trying to pull people out of the bus, break the windows and pull pieces of the chairs and stuff out of the bus to get to the people”.

Nine of the injured passengers remained hospitalized on Saturday.

The No. 13 bus had 17 passengers aboard, said NJ Transit Police Chief Chris Trucillo.

“We have some preliminary (sic) kind of data that says we suspect one of the bus drivers may have gone through a red light”, he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board will not investigate the crash, as claimed by a spokesperson.

Jennifer, one of Starbucks employees, told me she was remembered of her crash vehicle, the day after Hurricane Sandy.

Petrain and the co-worker ran out with ice water, rags and a first-aid kit.

NJ Transit Interim Executive Director Dennis Martin said both Barthelus and Roberts were “in good standing” with NJ Transit. Commuters have been advised of bus service delays and detours in the area. “We are not positive about that, but that is what is being said”, he said.

Shortly after the wreck, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka arrived at the crash site to speak with investigators. It was not known which bus the driver was in.

The crash occurred as the bus without passengers began its route between Newark and Dunellen; the other bus was traveling between Irvington and Clifton, NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder said. “It was bad. We saw people with head injuries, leg injuries”. The northbound bus that was struck is on its side, its frame bent and the other bus lodged in its undercarriage.

Investigators are working to figure out if the driver blew a red light
