1 killed when tornado hits Oklahoma town

Multiple tornadoes touched down Monday in parts of Oklahoma, leaving a path of destruction behind, and killing at least one person.

Sheriff Larry Rhodes says an elderly man was killed in his home in Garvin County.

The World in Tulsa, Okla., reports tornado warnings were in effect for some counties Monday night and that large hail also was possible.

Dana Lance was driving though the Pontoc County community of Roff on her way home from work Monday when the skies grew ominous, and she heard tonardo sirens and forecasters on the radio urging people in the area ot take cover.

Severe thunderstorms ripped through the central United States Monday evening, triggering the development of several destructive tornadoes.

The first tornado hit southern Oklahoma on Monday before another formed and began heading northwest toward Sulphur, Oklahoma, according to CBS News.

In southern Nebraska, the National Weather Service said a tornado caused some damage to a rural high school.

The National Weather Service has also issued a Tornado Warning for eastern Cleveland County and Pottawatomie County due a storm east of Norman moving toward the communities of Little Axe, Pink, and Shawnee. Oklahoma Highway Patrol closed Interstate 35 near Wynnewood for 15 minutes so the storm could pass, temporarily shutting down the primary route between Oklahoma City and Dallas. According to a local Fox affiliate in the area, meteorologists are expecting up to 111 miles per hour winds in the area between eastern Oklahoma and central Arkansas.

A tornado was also reported just outside of Odessa, Nebraska.

About 41 million people from Houston to Sioux City, Iowa, are at risk for some type of stormy weather Monday.

Hail two inches or more in diameter is possible from eastern Texas to southeastern Kansas.
