Freestyle queen Katie Ledecky won her third gold medal of the Rio Olympics by anchoring the USA women to victory in the 4×200 metres freestyle relay on Wednesday (Thursday morning, Aug 11, Singapore time) while struggling Missy Franklin opened her account without being in the water for the final.

But Wednesday, it was all about individual credentials at stake.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Thursday it has imposed an eight-year ban on the 31-year-old Italian in a fast-track case after an appeal hearing held Monday.

It was the fifth Olympic medal for Ledecky and fourth in these Games.

Days after Schwazer won the world championship in Rome in May, he tested positive for a steroid in further analysis of a sample given in January.

Phelps and Lochte have each medaled in the 200 IM in the last three Olympics.

In rugby sevens, Fiji goes against surprising Japan and South Africa faces Great Britain, all trying to get to the evening’s gold-medal match.

Racing side by side in the second semifinal, Phelps and Lochte secured the top positions for the final of the 200 individual medley, an event in which they’ve been squaring off since 2004.

Gold is on his mind as Michael Phelps looks for his 22nd Olympic medal of that color in the 200-meter individual medley at the Rio Olympics. Roommates this week at the Olympic Village, Phelps and Lochte won’t discuss their impending showdown during the day, but each man appreciates what they’ve been through together.

Phelps could also perform the feat in the 100m butterfly. But the most risky man in the final will be American Ryan Murphy, already the gold medalist in the 100 backstroke and doing as little as necessary to advance to the championship race in the longer distance. “We have one more time to hop in the pool and duke it out”.

Michael Phelps won his 21st career Olympic gold medal on Tuesday night, aided by Ryan Lochte in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

The first tee shot will be struck by Brazilian Adilson da Silva, who learned to play using tree branches for clubs.

Since the women’s 4 x 200 freestyle relay made its Olympic debut in 1996, the Americans have won the event in every Olympic Games but one.

World-record holder Rikke Moller Pedersen is the fifth seed at 2:22.45, the sixth position to Russia’s Yuliya Efimova* (2:22.52), the Russian mired in controversy over her presence at the meet.

Allison Schmitt led off the relay and came back after a slow first 50 to move into second. Still, she added two more medals to her trophy case, also getting a silver in the 4×100 relay along with Ledecky.
