1 million refugees enter Europe this year
The number of migrants and refugees crossing into Europe by land and sea this year illegally has passed one million, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) says.

At least 820,000 refugees and economic migrants have reached Greece’s eastern islands this year, risking the risky sea crossing in frail boats provided by Turkish smuggling gangs. “But it’s not enough to count the number of those arriving – or the almost 4,000 this year reported missing or drowned”.
“Persecution, conflict and poverty have driven a staggering 1 million people to seek safety in Europe in 2015”, Farhan Haq, the deputy UN spokesman, told reporters here, citing estimates by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
In 2015, more than half the arrivals were Syrian, while Afghans made up around 20 percent and Iraqis 7 percent.
According to the UN’s refugee agency, more than 950,000 people have reached Europe by sea this year.
The island of Farmakonisi has a population of about 10 people and is close to Turkey’s coast.
Campaigns director Kirsty McNeill added: “Despite many European countries and people generously helping one million refugees, Europe is doing too little to protect and help vulnerable refugee children and stop families drowning on our shores”.
Numerous refugees arriving in Europe are Syrians fleeing a foreign-backed militancy in their country.
The IOM says the migrants are still arriving, with 30,411 passing through Greece in the week between 9 and 16 December.
Nearly all those arriving came across the Mediterranean or the Aegean Seas, and half were Syrians fleeing the war.
The EU is also investing funds, assistance and assets in Turkey and countries neighboring Libya that migrants leave or travel across to get to Europe.
Over the year, it said that the number of people crossing the Mediterranean increased steadily from around 5,500 in January to a monthly peak in October of over 221,000.
Some 3,700 people are deceived to have died on their journey to Europe in 2015, with more than one million migrants and refugees entering the EU. “We are also seeing people coming from Afghanistan, from Iraq, from some of the countries in the Horn of Africa and so on, where we have large displacement situations”. He says their cases should be looked at to see if they have a legitimate claim for refugee status.

“I think we need all of us to be concerned, because we have never had a situation in recent times, where you have so many unresolved conflicts without any semblance of hope out there that any of these can be resolved in the short to medium term”.
