1 winning lottery ticket sold in Melbourne Beach

The North Carolina Education Lottery says it sold a single-day record of $27.8 million worth of lottery tickets yesterday, which includes $20.9 million for the Powerball alone.

Tickets that were sold in California, Tennessee and Florida matched all six numbers and those players will share the record $1.58 billion jackpot. Those tickets were sold at a Wawa on Urbana Pike in Frederick, an Amoco on Walker Mill Road in Capitol Heights and a 7-Eleven on Annapolis Road in Bladensburg.

Additionally, one person in Tennessee won $2 million, one person won $100,000, and 17 people won $50,000.

The California victor – and any other yet-to-be-announced winning ticket buyers – will be able to choose annual payments over 29 years or opt for a lump-sum payment of about $930 million.

The jackpot of $1.6 billion will be split three ways. There were 18 notable winners in the Hoosier state.

With each state setting its own lottery rules, the California retailer will get a $1 million bonus for selling the jackpot-winning ticket, while the Florida retailer, located in a tiny coastal town, will get $100,000.

The prospect of becoming instantly rich sparked a ticket-buying frenzy that was expected to have reached a rate of $1.3 million per minute during Wednesday’s evening rush hour, Gary Grief, executive director of the Texas lottery, told a news conference.

The announcement of the winners came after the previous 19 drawings produced no jackpot winners.

Virginia’s winners picked their tickets up in Salem and Virginia Beach, the Virginia lottery says.

A California Lottery spokesman is encouraging the state’s Powerball victor to be prepared with lawyers, accountants and financial planners. More than $1 billion has been donated to the state’s schools every year since 2001, according to the lottery website.
