’10 Cloverfield Lane’ Surprises At Box Office But Still Trails ‘Zootopia’

The well-reviewed 3D computer-animated family film about racial prejudice and stereotyping fell off just 33 percent from its record-breaking debut last weekend, and has topped $142 million domestically.

Deadpool, which still has a fighting chance of supplanting American Sniper’s $350 million domestic total to become second highest grossing rated-R movie of all time, slipped to third place this weekend, giving way to 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Internationally, Zootopia added another $83.1 million for a global total of $431.3 million.

The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman as two strangers sealed in a bunker as paranoia eats into the lives of several survivors of a mysterious disaster in the outside world.

But Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Brothers Grimsby” flopped with only $3.2 million, a career low debut at the box office for the British comedian by a wide margin. “But I think part of the excitement and mystery around the “Cloverfield” name led to the promise that something exciting was going to happen, and the trust in J.J.as a brand that he delivers”.

Disney’s animated hit “Zootopia” is sprinting past a pair of box office milestones Friday, March 11 crossing the $100 million mark in the US and $300 million worldwide, Variety reveals.

In the background is the growing war chest of “Deadpool”, which took in another $10.8 million.

Final figures are due Monday. Even though the rom-com The Perfect Match opened in the fewest theaters (925), it fared the best among the new releases, earning $4.2 million for sixth place.

“Gods of Egypt”, $2.5 million.

“London Has Fallen”, $10.7 million. It earned $3.9 million on Thursday to conclude its first week with $92.6 million.
