10 cool things to try in Apple’s iOS 10

Described by Apple as its “biggest iOS release ever”, iOS 10 introduces a number of improvements to the Siri digital assistant, including new integration with apps so users can speak with Siri for photo searches, payments, messaging and booking auto rides.

I’ve been using the software in beta for a couple of months, and for more than a week now on the latest iPhones.

Shortly after Apple released iOS 10 Tuesday, reports began emerging that the updated operating system caused problems for T-Mobile customers using the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or iPhone SE. The changes are the most dramatic since 2013, when Apple redesigned icons and introduced functions with swipes from various edges.

You know all those cute animated GIFs and stickers and doodles and stuff iMessages has?

Control flashlight brightness: In the redesigned Control Center, users are able to control the brightness of the flashlight using 3D Touch. Never mind that Google got a head start on Apple with this sort of thing.

Hiya Caller ID and Block: This app has what is called “auto span detection”, reverse phone lookup, and the ability to blacklist numbers.

You can use apps like Uber and WhatsApp with Siri.

Out of the box, the black looks much better in person and I am happy that I did not go with the jet black model.

I had better luck during other tries. When you want to view a notification, you can raise your iPhone and trigger the screen to light up. This didn’t completely go off without a hitch either. And just as many people are finding that suddenly their trusty iPhone is dying on them all of a sudden. I also ran into trouble with a Square Cash transaction. We have a walk-through for how to safely update to iOS 10 here. Here’s a peek at ten.

Although the iOS 10 is full of new features – revamped music app, a more fun iMessage app with stickers, AI-powered Photos app etc – the most significant probably is the more open ways in which apps can communicate and availability of Siri to third-party app developers.

The Phone app automatically transcribes your voicemails. If you prefer for your phone to remain mum, that’s an option too. The app will have many options and preferences which you can configure to meet your needs.

Handwriting in iMessages: Users can now add their own touch to their messages. You can also type in these searches yourself. Initially, the feature works with any pair of English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. It also includes support for the automated home with HomeKit. Have you considered blocking spam calls? Their latest update adds new CMYK curves to take advantage of the new color features of the iPhone 7. Users say, it makes their messages seem less threatening, which is most likely, what Apple was going after. You can select a minimum amount of storage for music, depending your phone’s capacity, from 16GB (about 3200 songs) to 128GB (25,600 songs). Now, you get those by swiping right from the left edge. Or that Apple Maps can remember where you parked your auto? You can make reservations on OpenTable when searching for a restaurant, or hail a Lyft while looking up directions to a location. For example, in a “Today view” notification screen I was told that my vehicle was parked 100 feet away from Churchill Rd., when I was parked on Churchill Rd.
