10-day curfew cripples life amid media lockdown in Kashmir (Evening Lead)

All mobile phone services including Internet and call facilities have been snapped across the Valley.
He said that the decision to continue the curfew was taken to maintain law and order in view of clashes at some places in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district and couple of places in the city yesterday.
Curfew remained in force in Kashmir and normal life paralysed for the ninth day today in the wake of clashes following killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani that left 39 persons dead and over 3100 injured.
Police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in strength across the Valley for strict implementation of the prohibitory orders, the official said.
Calling it an “attack” on the freedom of the press, Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has protested the alleged clampdown on the media in Kashmir Valley and demanded that it be allowed to function unhindered.
The Kashmir Reader, a daily English newspaper, said on its website Sunday that “the government has banned local media publications in Kashmir”, and called on its readers to “bear with us in this hour of crisis”.
Bandh suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital.
Authorities on Sunday extended the summer break for schools and colleges by a week, until July 24.
All schools, colleges and universities in the Valley continued to be shut.
Separatists have appealed the people to continue the shutdown till Monday.
Meanwhile, former MEA minister and Congress leader Salman Khurshid, who was accompanied by AICC General Secretary Ambika Soni for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation here following directions from the party president Sonia Gandhi said that it was unfortunate to hear about young people losing their vision due to pellets.

Separatist Kashmiri groups have held demonstrations outside the premises of India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations protesting against the Indian forces in the Valley and demanding United Nations intervention in the Kashmir issue. It’s not a new thing that Pakistan is fanning terrorism in Kashmir. Police said the protesters tried to storm a security camp.
