The explosion occurred at the Eidgah market in Kurram Agency’s Parachinar area which was bustling with people who were out shopping for clothes.
Security forces cordoned off the crime scene to collect the evidences.
The nature of the explosion is being investigated but officials believe it was a planted bomb that was detonated by remote control, Hussain said.
A doctor at the district headquarters hospital, where the wounded were taken, told AFP a lot of them were in critical condition and the death toll could increase.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but the region is known for sectarian clashes.
The injured were shifted to the Agency Headquarter Hospital and other hospitals in the nearby areas.
Kurram is one of the most sensitive tribal areas as it borders three Afghan provinces and at one point was one of the key routes for militant movement across the border.
