SP P Murugan Vaidyanath told India TV, “A group of devotees tried to jump the queue which resulted in the stampede after the door of temple was opened”. The lane leading to the temple is narrow and congested and the local administration was unable to handle the crowd that had gathered there.

The stampede took lives of 11 pilgrims, including eight women, and another 50 were injured who were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where they were treated.

Thousands of devotees flock to the temple in the month of August each year to offer the holy water of the river Ganga to Lord Shiva at the town’s famous Baidyanath temple.
