11 injured when ferry hits kayakers on Hudson River

Authorities say first responders pulled at least 10 kayakers out of the Hudson River after they collided with a New York Waterways ferry.

The 5:53 p.m. incident near Chelsea occurred near Pier 79, at 39th Street off the West Side of Manhattan, police said. Four people were sent to Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital wi.

A police spokesman says one person is in critical condition with an arm injury.

The Coast Guard, NYPD, FDNY, and Jersey City Fire Department rescued 11 injured kayakers from the water.

As many as 10 people are believed to have been hit by the ferry. Two men and two women paddlers received minor injuries to the shoulder and back, police said.

The captain has passed a drug and alcohol test.

Authorities were investigating whether the sunset or glare was a factor in the accident and what navigation rules applied.

Police say the NY Waterways ferry departed from Pier 79 and struck the kayakers as it was pulling out of the port.

A message left with the Manhattan Kayak Company was not immediately returned.
