11-minute hat trick for Lukaku; Everton beats Sunderland 3-0

His quick-fire hat-trick at the Stadium of Light condemned former Toffees boss David Moyes, who lost his job as Manchester United manager after a defeat by the same opposition in April 2014, to a third defeat in four league outings so far this season.

Romelu Lukaku netted a second-half hat-trick, as Everton secured a 3-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Monday night.

Since opening with a solid 1-1 draw at home against Spurs, Everton been enormously impressive in bookending a 4-0 EFL Cup thrashing of Yeovil Town with 1-2 and 1-0 Premier League victories against WBA and Stoke. I hoped to get some points on the board. We didn’t always pick the right pass.

The Black Cats continued to pile forward in an action packed first 45 minutes, but Ronald Koeman’s side eased through the gears following the interval when Lukaku headed Everton in front on the hour mark.

“The start in the Premier League is good – 10 points from four games – but we need to continue and we need to prepare for the next game on Saturday against Middlesbrough because maybe that will be more tough and more hard than it was in the second half tonight”.

Barkley, who played all three of England’s games at the 2014 World Cup finals, has scored twice in four games for his club at the start of this campaign, with Everton taking their unbeaten record under Koeman to Sunderland…

Having been appointed as Sam Allardyce’s successor at Sunderland in July, Moyes said the situation in the north-east echoed his move to Merseyside in 2003. I’m happy about the second half because the players by themselves showed what our level can be.

“We just didn’t do the basics in defence correctly and because of that we got punished”.

“We didn’t stop the crosses, didn’t defend the crosses, didn’t get in the right positions when they did come in”. I would like to improve on that. We couldn’t recover from it.

“It was concerning but you’re also looking at a bit of a rebuild”.

“Everton were very experienced a team”.

The striker had one good first half chance, a header which forced a great save from Jordan Pickford.

“In the last eight years, we finished in the top eight and really there were only one or two bad years – we finished 17th one year – and apart from that, the journey was terrific”. I’m beginning to wonder if he’ll be an even better manager than he was a player.
