CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. (AP) _ Authorities in far southeastern Missouri are investigator whether a stray bullet wounded an 11-year-old girl who was shot in the neck while traveling with her family on Interstate 55. The family thought that the window had broken due to the heat, but then the girl in the backseat began to complain about neck pain.
Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell told reporters that somebody contacted police about shooting a 9mm in the area around the same time of the incident. Greenwell says in talking with the man, if any shots were fired and missed the berm, it would be in line with I-55. However, this has not been determined as the official cause yet.
Greenwell said the 11 year old was release from the hospital Sunday morning and the family continued on their vacation.

Investigators say a person firing a gun nearby at the time of the shooting surrendered two pistols for ballistic tests.
