12 travel-related cases of Zika virus confirmed in Arkansas

Another locally acquired case of the Zika virus has been found outside the hot zones in Wynwood and Miami Beach.

As Zika infections continue to spread around the nation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is recommending that all donated blood and blood components be tested for the mosquito-borne virus. The virus can also be spread through sex.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott will travel Washington, D.C., on September 6 to meet with members of Congress and discuss the immediate need for funding to combat the Zika virus, the governor’s office announced Thursday afternoon.

Expanding the guidance is expected to further reduce the risk of transmitting Zika through the USA blood supply, the FDA said.

With the number of Zika cases in the United States growing, the mayor of Miami Beach, Florida, says he’s frustrated that Congress still hasn’t passed a bill to help combat the virus.

Since January, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting 1,658 Zika disease cases nationwide.

“To date we have a total of 43 cases that are non-travel related in the entire state”, Scott said.

Some 2,500 people in the USA now have Zika, most acquired from overseas travel, with another 9,000 cases in Puerto Rico, according to the CDC. The domestic American cases include 22 believed to be the result of sexual transmission, one that was the result of laboratory exposure, plus 14 new cases from local mosquitoes.
