A 12-year-old boy said he was wading waist deep in the water at Fernandina Beach when he felt a bite near his knee.

The 16-year-old, Filippo Schiavo of St. Augustine, has been released from the hospital but will need surgery to fix tendon damage, his mother told News4Jax.

The boy was treated at the scene for lacerations, and was taken to UF Health in Jacksonville for further treatment.

The boy’s father, Joshua Bitner of Sparks, stated he saw a Four-foot-long shark with a black-tipped dorsal fin thrashing within the water near his son.

Last Thursday a 20-year-old man in Jacksonville Beach suffered injuries from what appeared to be a shark bite.
