12th South Asian Games

The India women’s football team will clash with Bangladesh in a must-win match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Saturday looking to advance to the final of the South Asian Games (SAG). Sri Lanka are on the second spot with 59 medals (11 gold, 25 silver and 23 bronze).

The blue-riband event of athletics was expected to trigger gold rush for India and it went pretty much that way with athletes contributing 7 gold medals to the tally. India also pocketed a gold each in men’s 50m pistol team event and women’s 10m air rifle team event. Arvind Panwar was the other top cyclist for India, clinching two golds – one each in individual and team category.

Later, the Indian team comprising Chain Singh, Narang and Surendra Singh Rathod, won the gold in 50m rifle prone event with a total score of 1871.5.

The outcome Thursday’s tie was disappointing for India which came to the match riding on a 5-0 victory over Sri Lanka two days ago.

India coach Sajid Yusuf Dhar said that Nepal were always going to be a tough opponents but now they can only look forward to winning against Bangladesh as the result for that match will decide which country plays the final.

Sri Lankan sportsmen and women will compete in a number of events today and Sri Lanka can hope for several medals in those disciplines.

This triumph would be a big boost for the Indian women ahead of the Rio Olympics. India won the gold in 1995 in the then Madras.

Matthew Abeysinghe also won Gold in the Men’s 50 metres freestyle event, setting a new South Asian record. Pakistan also won couple of silver medals in shooting event.

In men’s singles final tomorrow, India’s Saketh Myneni will take on Ramkumar Ramanathan.

In men’s doubles, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Vijay Prasanth had won gold after beating the pair of Divij Sharan and Sanam Singh 6-3 6-4.

India dominated the shooting ranges too grabbing all the five gold medals on offer.

Manika earlier won the women’s doubles crown with Pooja Sahasrabudhe.
