13 killed as rockslide hits slum in Karachi

Police said the incident took place early on October 13 when a mass of mud and rocks crashed down a hill into camps in Karachi, the capital of southern Sindh Province. The rescue teams arrived after the incident and pulled out the bodies from the debris.

The ill-fated families came from Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan of Punjab. After ARY News highlighted the issue, the administration became active and Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui reached the scene of the incident with heavy machinery. Two families comprising 13 people were living in the shanties hit by the rockslide, area residents said. Only a few days ago, they constructed three shanties which were decimated by heavy rocks.

“After up to five hours of rescue work the 13 bodies of the victims were recovered from the heap of stones and dust”, Javed Jaskani senior police officer tolf AFP.

He directed the concerned authorities to speed up relief efforts and ensure recovery of all person stuck in the sand.

Prime Minister has also directed to provide special medical care to the injured and every possible help to the families of the deceased.
