13-year-old girl dead, brother missing in Illinois river

A 13-year-old girl has died after falling into the Kankakee River in Wilmington.

The siblings “wandered into the water and got pulled in to the roller current of the dam”, said a statement from Wilmington Police.

Authorities in Wilmington, which is in southwest Will County about 60 miles from of Chicago, responded to the incident about 6 p.m. Monday. The search – now a recovery effort – would resume at dawn Tuesday, Arnold added. Abiyail Arroyo, of Joliet, was unresponsive when pulled from the water, officials said.

Two people who initially called police were able to pull the girl from the water, Wilmington Deputy Fire Chief Tom Friddle told reporters.

Two brothers, Alvaro and Ramon Ibarra from Blue Island, were nearby at the time and jumped into the water in an attempt to save the children, but the turbulence was so strong they ended up having to be rescued themselves, police said. She was pronounced dead Monday evening, May 30, after being taken to a hospital in serious condition. He was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and admitted in critical condition, according to the news release. The boy and his 13-year-old sister were reportedly at a family event but went missing after venturing into an area marked “No Swimming”.
