The Times News of Burlington reported that the pileup began when a Jeep collided with another vehicle, and then careered into another close to a freeway exit.

No one was killed in Sunday’s wrecks about halfway between Durham and Greensboro.
The first incident, which involved about 25 vehicles, happened on eastbound I-40 near the Jimmie Kerr Road overpass, in Alamance County, at about 3:30 p.m., according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The multi-vehicle crashes resulted in 25 injuries.
Rain and heavy fog are said to be part of the cause of yesterday’s 100-plus vehicle crash on I-40.
The statement adds that high speed, following too closely and a failure by motorists to pay attention to road conditions were also to blame.
Both directions of travel were reopened late Sunday night.
None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening. The cause of the accidents are still under investigation, but Jenkins said some of the wrecks were caused as people slowed to take pictures of the scene.
“Highway Patrol is going to have their hands full investigating every accident”, Pickard said just before 9 p.m., when yet another five-car collision had just been called in.
Authorities told WRAL-TV the wet roadway may have been a factor in many accidents and rubbernecking could have caused several others.
