Police say the bombing killed 12 officers, a soldier and a civilian.
Initial reports said five people, including polio team members, were killed and several others injured.
When they were hit, among the police officers who survived the blast said his team was preparing to leave for assorted neighbourhoods around Quetta.
” Bugti said it was being investigated whether it was a suicide attack or a bomb blast”. Two proscribed militant groups claimed credit for the deadly bombing that also left more than 25 people injured.
“We claim the bomb blast on the polio office”.
According to bomb disposal squad, seven kilograms of explosives were used in the attack.
Ahmed Marwat, who identified himself as a commander and spokesman for Jundullah, said the group was responsible.
Attempts to eradicate polio through immunization drives in Pakistan – one of only three countries where polio remains endemic – have been stymied by repeated attacks on health workers and security personnel. Officials said the death toll could rise further.
“Body pieces of the suicide bomber have been collected by security agencies to initiate a probe into the incident”, said the official.
In his statement, the prime minister said that the government is committed to stamp out extremism from the country and the operation will continue till elimination of terrorism. “Our force was ready to move out with the polio vaccination team, then a blast took place”.
The attack comes two days after Islamabad hosted a meeting of representatives of Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and the United States to discuss ending the Taliban’s 14-year insurgency.

No group has made claim to the attack, but the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda has been linked to it after previous acts against polio centers and on health workers. Over 55,000 children of Afghan refugees are to be vaccinated under the campaign. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also condemned the blast and prayed for eternal rest and peace for the departed souls.
