The Boeing 767-200ER was built in 1986.

The airlines connects Fort Lauderdale, New York, Venezuela and Guyana. And it’s had issues before, including reportedly filing for bankruptcy this summer.

Siegel also said the airport is closed, with departing flights on hold and arriving flights being diverted to other airports. “Had this happened later in the day it would have had more of an impact”.

The passengers who spoke with media agreed: they said the airport and first responders had done exactly what they should have. “Operation-wise and safety-wise, it couldn’t have worked any better”.
