’16 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Among Vehicles Recalled for Powertrain Problem
This is the company’s second CVT-related recall in the United States this month, after it issued a notice for 45,731 of the Outlander Sport (ASX) SUVs for leaking transmissions. Now, a different problem with that same CVT has resulted in a recall affecting the 2015 and 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, as well as 2016 models of the Outlander and Lancer.

Should the company’s Australian arm issue a local recall notice, it would add to a pair of major recalls over the last two months, which nears a total of 480,000 affected vehicles. After departing from a stopover or following coasting areas the CVT’s range switch can have a signal loss, the transmission’s ECU then incorrectly assumes the driver is shifting from Neutral to Drive and the software wants to cut power to prevent the gearbox from being damaged – this aspect could prove risky if the owner is turning against traffic or merging on a highway. The system misinterprets the signal glitch as a manual switch from neutral to drive when the throttle is open. Mitsubishi dealers will reprogram the CVT control unit at no charge.
The said failsafe is the cause of the hesitation in acceleration, and it is generated by a command sent by the transmission’s control unit to the engine’s control unit, which is told to limit torque output, thus causing the described “hesitation.” .
The recall started on the 15th of August.
