A wave of violence which erupted on October 1 has claimed the lives of 26 Israelis, as well as an American, a Sudanese and an Eritrean, according to an AFP count.

According a Thursday police statement that quoted the charge sheet, the two 14-year-old girls from the central city of Ramle chose to carry out a stabbing attack after three Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces on February 3 at the Damascus Gate, one of the entrances to the Old City of al-Quds (Jerusalem).

The organisations said “the Israeli army has committed gross and systematic violations of the rules of global humanitarian law in Rafah which amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity, through the organised targeting of Palestinian civilians, infrastructure and property and the killing of 255 Palestinians, including 212 civilians”.

Most of the Palestinians were killed carrying out attacks, while others died during clashes and demonstrations.

US-backed peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel collapsed in April 2014 after nine months of fruitless meetings amid bitter recriminations.

Israel blames incitement by Palestinian leaders and media as a main cause of the unrest.

Also on Wednesday, Israeli opposition leader Isaac Herzog spoke of his proposal to begin unilaterally separating from the Palestinians “as much as possible” to restore security, saying he sees no peace deal possible for now.

“In the past weeks there have been a number of developments in Area C, which risk undermining the viability of a future Palestinian state and driving the parties yet further apart”, the European Union diplomatic service said in a statement. There has been no immediate Israeli army comment to the incident.
