17 die in Etah after drinking spurious liquor

State authorities have suspended six officials, including four policemen, for allowing the sale of illicit liquor in Etah district, almost 240 kilometres (150 miles) south-west of Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh state capital.

Seventeen labourers have died and about a dozen others are fighting for their lives in northern India after drinking toxic homemade liquor, police said Sunday (July 17), in the latest incident of alcohol poisoning in the country. Persons who have lost eyesight include Naresh, Vijay, Sarvesh, Kallu and Arvind.

Several among 25 people admitted to the hospital were in serious condition and the death toll could rise further. Shripal was caught from the state’s Nayagaon area, police said.

Angry at the development, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday suspended the SDM, district excise officer, circle officer and the station house officer of the area.

Three district officials and seven policemen have been suspended for neglect of duty with state authorities ordering an investigation into the matter.

Joint and Deputy Excise Commissioners have visited the site of the tragedy in Etah.

In April, eight people died including two soldiers after drinking tainted liquor in the western desert state of Rajasthan.

Reports said officials have issued a list of 17 deceased persons who died after consuming the spurious liquor.
