17th Annual Veterans Memorial Ceremony

America’s military men and women were honored at Aiken’s annual Memorial Day Parade. In case of rain, the event will begin at the Joe Williams American Legion post.

11 a.m.: Ceremony at the Vietnam Memorial, Gloucester High School. The day does honor veterans who have died but is largely meant to thank living veterans for their service.

Virginia and Filley: Services at Virginia Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., followed by services at the Filley Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Services conducted by Fisher American Legion Post 367 of Virginia.

Historians of 25 cities claim their city is the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1866.

The presidential proclamation issued by President Barack Obama notes that 3 p.m. local time Monday is the designated time for all Americans to observe, in whatever way they choose, the National Moment of Remembrance.

The holiday Memorial Day weekend is upon us and this is when we remember and thank those fallen heroes that died fighting for our country.

American Legion Post 491, Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 188 and Veterans of Foreign War Post 4600 – invite the public to attend our Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at Veterans Park on Pearl Street in McHenry. May 30, volunteers are requested to place supplied flags on veteran’s graves starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, at Oakview Cemetery, at 1032 N. Main.

The North Haven community observed Memorial Day with a ceremony and a parade on Saturday. The ceremony gets underway at 11 a.m.at the Capay Cemetery, located 2 miles west of Esparto on County Road 22.

Kobes said their event is held early so those wanting to go to other events do not have to choose between several different options. Joining veterans as usual will be the Algonquin Regional High School Band, the Trottier Band, Boys Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts. The presentation concluded with Taps being played by trumpeter John Stone.
