2 dead, hundreds displaced by Maryland floods

The picturesque Main Street of Ellicott City, Maryland, faces a monthslong recovery that could cost hundreds of millions of dollars after devastating flooding left two dead and damaged almost every home and business along the road, officials said.

Owners of vehicles that were towed from the Main Street area of Ellicott City following this weekend’s flooding can pick up their cars this week, Tuesday through Sunday, free of charge. “I’ve lived in Howard County well over 50 years”.

“Oh, she yelled at me at first in tears, told me to never do it again”, he said, referencing what happened when he got back home to his wife.

The bodies of two people, a man and a woman, were found in the aftermath, one in the river, officials said.

“No one has ever seen devastation like this in Ellicott City or anywhere in Howard County”, Kittleman said. An additional 20 cars were stuck in an area of the river.

People watching the horror unfold jumped into action, forming human chains to rescue those trapped. He says she was thrilled when she got the job in the past year because it enabled her to spend more time at home and at the church, where she volunteered in a child-care program. “It was a flash flood. I really owe you”. One group formed a human chain to save a trapped motorist; Jonathan Butkus, 37, raced into the waist-deep water and carried a teenager out of a auto on his shoulders. The flooding was worse than that from Hurricane Agnes in 1972, when a bridge and historic structures were wiped out, Kittleman said.

“I went to school with (Sen.) Ben Cardin”, Eve said. “That tells me this is not going to defeat us”.

On Monday evening, Kittleman hosted a packed community meeting to share resources with residents who suffered damage.

2 people were killed and there were numerous rapid water rescues during Saturday night’s flooding. He said that there are more “urbanized impervious surfaces” such as as asphalt and concrete that increases the water that runs off into streams, lakes and rivers.

The flash flooding has claimed at least two lives – 35-year-old woman Jessica Watsula and a 38-year-old Joseph Anthony Blevins.

The video came from historic town of Ellicott City where a woman unsuccessfully attempted to drive through to raging flood waters.

They were inside the Watsula’s vehicle, when they were swept away by the flood. The rest of her family managed to exit the vehicle safely, but Watsula was swept away.
