A US Apache helicopter crashed in central South Korea today, killing its pilot and another crew member, police and military officials said.

The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. local time, or 4:30 a.m. Eastern time, about 50 miles east of Camp Humphreys, said Lt. Col. Chris Hyde, a spokesman for 2nd Infantry Division.

“The helicopter was burnt to ashes after catching fire”, he said, adding two pilots died at the scene. Their identities will not be released until the next of kin are notified.

Little else is known about the crash, like what caused it, but an officer has said there were no reports of casualties on the ground. “Our first priority is to provide their families with the support they need during this hard time”.

US has about 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea, according to Reuters. The Korean Peninsula remains in a technical state of war because the 1950-1953 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.
