2 detained after loaded gun found in carry-on bag at LAX

Authorities say Rapper Coolio was one of two people arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on suspicion of possessing a firearm. It was later revealed that the bag, and the items inside, belonged to the man’s traveling companion who left the screening area and boarded an aircraft for departure.

Police took possession of a carry-on bag on the X-ray screening belt and detained a 39-year-old man who claimed the bag, Hernandez said.

The Grammy award victor was booked under his real name, Artis Leon Ivey Jr., and his bailed was listed as $37,308.

53, of Las Vegas – whose stage name is Coolio – was booked today at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Station for possession of a firearm by a felon, airport police Officer Alicia Hernandez said. LAX security stopped the men after they found a gun inside Coolio’s carry-on bag.

Police determined that the gun had been stolen, and both Coolio and his security guard were arrested, according to the report. While Coolio’s security guard first claimed to be the owner of the bag, the “Gangsta’s Paradise” rapper allegedly later said it was his.
