Two Chinese diplomats have been flown to China to stand trial for a gun attack in Cebu that killed two of their colleagues and wounded another, Philippine authorities said Saturday.

Jose says the Chinese government invoked diplomatic immunity for the couple under the 1961 Vienna Convention and a 2009 bilateral accord between Beijing and Manila.

But in his comments to reporters, Jose did not clarify their positions or identities, and said authorities still did not know why the shootings took place.

“They have been at odds for a long time over personal finances”, Lawas said, adding the fight “was purely personal”.

China’s consul-general in the central city of Cebu survived after being shot in the neck, but two of his staff members died during the lunchtime attack at a restaurant last Wednesday.

“The couple… are still in our custody but in view of an agreement between the Philippines and China, we would respect and honor their immunity”, said a senior police officer, who declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media. “They [Chinese authorities] asked for help, so the evidence obtained by [the Philippine police] will be shared with them”.

Since their arrest on Wednesday, the couple remained at the Cebu City Police Office in Camp Sotero Cabahug, which is a smaller facility.

“It is my respectful submission that diplomatic immunity…” The victims and the suspects were attending a birthday lunch in a private room at the Lighthouse restaurant when the shooting occurred.

Police are investigating how Li had acquired the.45-cal.

The suspects are now still in the custody of Philippine police in Cebu, about 570 kms (350 miles) south of Manila, at Beijing’s request, he said.

It is unclear, however, whether Li’s Colt Defender is a clone of the highly reliable concealed-carry 1911 made by the U.S. gunmaker Colt’s Manufacturing Co., which sells its products only to the U.S. government.
