The women, 23 and 24 years old, from Vermont, went missing last night in the Sage Creek Campground area.
About 6 a.m. Thursday, the search started again and they found the women about three miles from their starting destination at the Sage Creek Campground.
Bak and Jacob said they were rained on a little bit in the night, but were able to hide out under a makeshift shelter. Crews searched until 2 a.m. but gave up due to darkness. The hikers didn’t immediately respond to telephone and text messages for comment Thursday from The Associated Press.
Authorities say two hikers who spent the night lost in South Dakota’s Badlands National Park hiked with rescuers back to their campground and declined medical treatment.
Dietz was eating dinner at Perkins on Wednesday evening when he received a call that two hikers were missing out in the Badlands.
The hikers were spotted by the rescue teams at about 9:30 a.m. and it took another hour to reach them.
“There’s bunches of trees, a lot of wild grasses that are kind of hard to walk through”, she said.
The women began their hike late yesterday afternoon and soon realized that they were lost. Garland says it is easy for hikers to become lost if they wander off established trails. There are wild animals in the area, including bison.

Garland said the sheriff’s office wants to remind hikers to be prepared before heading out.
