The Morris & Essex line is reporting delays, “due to earlier police activity in Elizabeth” according to the Travel Alert on the New Jersey Transit website.
An explosion in Manhattan on Saturday injured 29 people. Following the explosion, an investigation found four more unexploded devices along the route.
“I don’t have the expertise to determine the blast function of that, but based on the loudness, I think people could have been severely hurt or injured if they were in the vicinity when that went off”.
A backpack found near a New Jersey railway station exploded even as a bomb squad was attempting to disarm it, while authorities examined another suspicious package containing up to five devices, media reported on Monday.
Two men had reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of a package after finding it at the train station around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
There was no immediate report of injuries or damage.
“They walked underneath the train trestle, saw the wires and pipes inside the bag inside the bag, dropped it immediately, walked around the corner to police headquarters, who contacted Union County Bomb Squad”, Bollwage said.
Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor service is operating on a modified schedule. Amtrak said 2,400 passengers were affected.
The recent events have also led to an increased precautionary police presence surrounding NJ Transit’s New Brunswick train station this morning after a suspicious package was found on top of the Douglas Parking Deck on the Rutgers New Brunswick campus. Officials said the two incidents did not appear to be connected, but they weren’t ruling anything out. The FBI was working to disarm the other four devices. As many as five people were detained after the traffic stop, according to ABC News and The New York Post.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday that people will see “a very substantial NYPD presence this week – bigger than ever”.
