2 in Custody in Death of 9-Year-Old Tyshawn Lee

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy announced at a news conference on Friday that they had arrested 27-year-old Corey Morgan on a first-degree murder charge for the killing of Tyshawn Lee on November 2. A series of events led up to Tyshawn’s killing, McCarthy said, including at least two other murders and a number of other shootings. He was ordered held without bail Friday.

A third suspect, who is believed to also be involved with the same gang, is already in custody on an unrelated charge, and McCarthy said he is “not getting out anytime soon”. It does not mention a role of the third man.

Threat… Corey Morgan reportedly said he was going to kill everyone after his brother was gunned down. If anyone wanted to harm him, he or she could find the opportunity, he said.

Members of a rival gang lured Tyshawn away from a park near his grandmother’s home and shot him, investigators said.

McCarthy described Morgan as an individual with “extensive violent criminal history who likely shouldn’t have been on the streets”, writes ABC News. All men are documented gang members, police said.

An autopsy of Tyshawn’s body showed two perforating gunshot wounds, and part of his right thumb was lost as a defensive wound trying to block a gunshot, court papers said. Morgan’s brother Tracey was gunned down just three weeks prior to Tyshawn’s murder, leading police to say that Tyshawn was targeted for retaliation for Tracey Morgan’s death, according to CBS News. He also had bullet wounds on his hands and back.

At the time of his arrest, Boone-Doty was out on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections on a drug and weapons case. Police issued a first-degree murder warrant in the case for a 22-year-old Kevin Edwards Friday morning. He was shot in the head and suffered several graze wounds. During a Friday bond hearing, the judge yelled and berated Morgan, calling him a predator and a danger to the community. Police believe he was one of three people involved in the young boy’s execution-style shooting in Chicago earlier this month.

After he identified himself, he was arrested, police said.

The three men spotted Tyshawn in a play lot where he had climbed onto the swings after setting his basketball down beside him, prosecutors said.

Tyshawn, who was just 83 pounds and 56 inches tall, wore black jeans, plaid boxers, an orange Polo shirt and a dark jacket with yellow lining on his final day of life.

“Whoever did this, there is a special place for them”, he said.
