2 men charged in shooting of National Basketball Association star’s cousin

“You have a mother who was trying to enroll her children at school. We’ve learned to thank God for the memories because we have had loss in the family”, she added, noting that one of Nykea’s sisters also died in gun violence.

Aldridge’s accused killers, Derren Sorrells, 22, and his 26-year-old brother, Darwin Sorrells Jr., were targeting a man who had driven a group of women to Parkway Gardens from a nearby suburb, authorities said.

“We’re still going to try and help these people to transform their minds and give them a different direction, so this thing won’t keep happening”, Jolinda Wade said outside of the hospital, according to ESPN.

The man was not an Uber driver, as had been previously reported, Deenihan said. Darwin Sorrells lived in an apartment not far from the site of the shooting, and some neighbors were not surprised to hear of his involvement. Darwin Sorrells had been released in February; Derren Sorrells was released only two weeks ago and was wearing an electronic monitoring device. That is more than the number of guns recovered in the two larger cities of NY and Los Angeles combined, he said.

The murder has proved especially significant for Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson who has long called for stricter punishments and longer sentences for offenders as a way to help fight his city’s rising crime rates.

“This is one of those moments that is a dream come true” Wade said at a July press conference with his family present.

Donald Trump tweeted Saturday that tragedies like the shooting death of Wade’s cousin are one of the reasons African-Americans will vote for him. The other was picked up later in the evening.

Diann Aldridge wept as she clutched a photo of her daughter, Nykea Aldridge, 32, and payed tribute to her memory. “Her life is gone too soon”. “I can’t bring her back, but I forgive them”.

Following her slaying, Dwyane Wade – who recently signed a $47.5 million contract to play for the Bulls in Chicago – sent out a series of tweets calling on people to help end the violence in his embattled city and saying “these young kids are screaming for help!” with the hashtag #EnoughIsEnough. He tweeted about his cousin’s death Friday night. According to the news station, donation checks can be made payable to the Nykea Aldrige Children’s Fund and mailed to Seaway National Bank, Attn: Daryl Newell, Chief Retail Officer, 645 East 87th Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60619.
