There have been no reported cases of the Zika virus disease transmitted by mosquitoes in Texas, but the state is on high alert for the possibility of local transmission.
The state’s Health Department said one of the patients contracted the virus in Wynwood and a second one contracted it while staying just beyond the one-square-mile affected area.
Positive tests have been reported in Jefferson County and 15 others, including Calhoun, Cullman, Etowah, Houston, Lawrence, Lee, Limestone, Madison, Mobile, Montgomery, Morgan, Shelby, St. Clair, Talledega and Tuscaloosa counties.

A man tested positive for the virus following travel to an area where active mosquito transmission of Zika is now taking place and travel advisories have been issued.
The mosquito-borne virus has caused the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue travel warnings for pregnant women.
– Zika, the virus linked to a devastating birth defect, has come to Orange County.
To prevent the spread of disease, people traveling to those areas now affected should carefully follow steps to avoid mosquito bites while there.
McVay said that many individuals want to be tested for Zika, but the CDC only recommends testing for some individuals. British women have been advised to postpone travel to Florida if they are pregnant. Although only about one in four or five people infected with Zika go on to develop symptoms, those that do will experience a rash, bloodshot eyes, and a fever. If your partner lives in or has traveled to an area with Zika and you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the near future, always used condoms during intercourse.
Health officials in Puerto Rico are also concerned about the severe birth defects caused by the virus.
Public health officials also encourage people traveling to Zika-infected regions to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes or becoming diagnosed with Zika.
