Police are not aware of any relationship between Hutchinson and Annese, who, along with several members of the university basketball team, also rented a room at the house, he said. “We don’t know the exact intentions of Mr. Kingston in purchasing that knife, but certainly it seems that shortly thereafter – being obviously distraught [by] the recent break-up, and his mental status or well-being was certainly affected by that recent break-up – he either was intending to bring harm to himself or to somebody else, in this case, Ms. Annese”.

On Sunday, authorities in a small town south of Rochester, New York, responded to a frantic call from a father who said his son had called to tell him the he had just killed his girlfriend and that he was going to kill himself.
“All three individuals succumbed to injuries from stab wounds”, said Jeffrey Szczesniak, the public information officer for the Geneseo police department.
Hutchinson and Annese had both played in games on Saturday, hours before they were killed. She was also a member of the Geneseo women’s basketball team.
Hutchinson had played hockey since he was a child and wanted to be a firefighter after graduating.
According to police, Kingston and Amnese were dating for three years previously, but they broke up sometime prior to the murder.
The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the Geneseo Police Department, the New York State Police, the Livingston County District Attorney’s Office and SUNY University Police Department have all been part of the investigation. Its possible that Annese, 21, and Hutchinson, 24, were sleeping when Kingston entered, but police were not sure.
“All the indications from talking to those witnesses is that no one had heard anything that made them believe there was anything happening in the house”, said Szczesniak.
Police said Annese lived at the Wadsworth home.
“This is a sad day for the entire SUNY family, as the details of an unspeakable tragedy affecting the SUNY Geneseo campus community come to light”. Hutchinson was a full time student, volunteer firefighter and varsity hockey player at the College.

Men’s and women’s basketball games scheduled for Tuesday were cancelled, Battle said, adding a remembrance ceremony will be held Wednesday for the two slain students. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all involved”.
In his commentary, Hutchinson recalled a summer stint with the British Columbia Wildfire Service: “The days can be long, the work grueling, but very rewarding”.

“I can say that Matt was really in the upper echelon of our department”, Chanler said.
