The two Baton Rouge officers are in stable condition.
Two Baton Rouge Police officers were shot and taken to a hospital after a shooting Saturday morning.
Sergeant Don Coppola, a spokesman for the BPRD, told The Advocate that the incident occurred around 6 a.m.as officers responded to a call about damage to property.
Smith was also shot, and remains in critical condition at a local hospital and is undergoing surgery.
The officers returned fire and struck the suspect.
The two officers arrived moments later and the suspect left in a separate auto and drove to family member’s house on Fairfield Avenue.
Police said the officers’ injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore said a bullet grazed the head of one officer; the other officer was hit in the stomach but protected by his bulletproof vest.
Smith was on probation on a 2014 charge of cruelty to a juvenile, Moore said.
East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Kip Holden visited the hospital Saturday where the officers were taken and said the shooting should be a wake-up call for the Baton Rouge community about mental health issues. She said he has a history of mental illness and had attempted suicide previously, but she had not noticed any unusual behavior recently.
Moore said one officer was white and the other is black.
Chambers says Smith, the son of her godmother, has been living with her since December.
Moore said at least one of the officers was wearing a body camera, but it wasn’t immediately known whether he was able to activate it before the confrontation.
Hope Walker, who said she’s a close friend of Smith’s, said she was staying with someone down the street when she heard three gunshots early Saturday morning. There was a pause and then a quick round of gunshots, according to Walker.
Police have not released the names of the injured cops or the suspect.

Moore’s office will carry out an independent investigation. He fired at the two officers, striking both of them.
