Around 3:20 a.m., one officer took a bullet to the right hip and the other was stuck in the chest, the bullet hitting his protective vest, NYPD Commissioner William Bratton said.

The injured cops were following a suspicious vehicle going the wrong way on Lexington Avenue shortly before the shooting, sources said. Officers opened fire, striking Funes several times. The suspect was also shot and is critical condition.

Officials say officers had heard gunfire and as they approached the suspect, he pointed a revolver and fled. Both are plainclothes, anti-crime officers assigned to the 81st Precinct.

Authorities said the officers chased the suspect and called for backup before they were shot. “And thank God for what they do for us”.

Redding, who has two children with a third on the way, has spent nine years on the force, Mayor de Blasio said from Kings County Hospital Saturday morning.

Funes has four prior arrests in NY, all of which are sealed, a police spokesman said.
