Indiana State Police said it happened around 12:30 a.m. Sunday in Russiaville.
The shooting began when Sgt. Jordan Buckley and Deputy Carl Koontz of the Howard County Sheriff’s Department, along with officers from the Kokomo Police Department, knocked on the door of a Russiaville home to serve a search warrant, the Indiana State Police said.
The Indiana State Police are leading the investigation on the scene and are providing support to the local law enforcement community in Howard County. However, Koontz is said to be in very critical condition. Buckley, a nine-year veteran, was in stable condition.
At 1:20 PM on Sunday, a motorcade took the body of Deputy Koontz from Methodist Hospital to the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
The officers were shot at when they went inside.
