2 polar bears tranquilized after exhibit breakout

Visitors had been moved inside as a precaution but were free to leave the park. In 1990, a Cincinnati Zoo worker lost an arm after Icee the polar bear attacked her during a feeding.

It was a bear-y close call Wednesday at the Cincinnati Zoo when a female polar bear named Berit escaped her exhibit, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Curley says visitors weren’t at any risk. She said early Wednesday afternoon that the situation was ongoing, but under control. There are no injuries to animal staff or visitors.

Kevin Sullivan said in a post that “zoo rep told us they have the bear contained but is still at risk of getting out into the zoo”. The accounts showcased where she went throughout the day as the Zoo was closed.

Berit and her twin brother, Ulaq, came to Cincinnati in 2000 from the Denver Zoo, according to Enquirer archives.

The glass viewing panels give visitors a “nose-to-nose” experience with the polar bears.
