Nobody was injured by the gunfire reported about 3:30 a.m. Friday in Columbia. Officials said four officers from three departments were fired upon from an upstairs window. Their charges include attempted criminal homicide of a police officer, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment. Rentas is also being charged with possession of a firearm by a minor. Police say when they arrived on the scene, someone started shooting at the responding officers.

Officers, from Columbia, East Hempfield and West Hempfield departments, say that their vehicles were being targeted.

Police set up a perimeter and established where the shots were coming from. “It appeared to be moving from different positions, so we believed at that point that we had an active shooter situation.” said Tom Rudzinski, a spokesman for the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team. None were hurt and they didn’t return fire.

Rentas was identified as a potential suspect in the shootings.

Stedman added that Rentas’ family was helpful in during the investigation, including providing a key so officers could enter the home where he was found.

Police made entry into the home. A scoped rifle was next to him.

It is unknown if the original shots fired call was used to lure police to the scene. Stedman said Nace was handing bullets to Rentas and picking up the spent shell casings.
