Morales is a friend of the child’s mother and spent a lot of time at the home, according to Lakewood Police spokesman Steve Davis.

The toddler’s horrifying discovery came about 20 minutes after his family called police and went frantically knocking on neighbors’ doors, asking if they had seen the child.

The child was found in a container with a lid on it and a cord wrapped around his neck.

The boy was unconscious and rushed to the hospital. Just before 2 p.m., the child was pronounced dead by medical staff, Davis said. They took him into custody after hours of questioning.

Police describe Morales as an acquaintance of the toddler’s mother, and was staying at her apartment with them. “Detectives are interviewing several people and associates of the family and do not believe there is any danger to the community”. Officers also conducted a thorough search of the apartment.

Davis says police are investigating but don’t know whether the incident was an accident or a crime.
