Based on the latest documents submitted to the NHTSA, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) is recalling 1.9 million vehicles and Volkswagen AG (ETR:VOW3) is recalling 217,000 vehicles.
According to Nelson, ruptures of these airbags are responsible for more than 100 injuries in the USA and at least 13 deaths worldwide.
According to the report, Toyota, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Mitsubishi, and Volkswagen are selling some new cars with potentially defective airbag inflators.
U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., were critical of the automakers in a joint statement and called on manufacturers to publibly state which makes, models and years of vehicles contain Takata airbags containing ammonium nitrate. Toyota said it’s phasing out those inflators, but a spokesman didn’t know by what date. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced today that more than 2 million Toyota, Chrysler and Honda vehicles are being recalled for faulty air bags that may inflate while the auto is running.
