21-year-old Nashville swimmer drowns in Florida YMCA pool

A Dartmouth College swimmer has died at a YMCA pool after making an attempt to complete four laps underwater without surfacing to breathe.

Investigators said Ramsden had swam about 4,000 yards already before he began to practice his underwater swimming techniques.

Dartmouth was a competitive swimmer and diver for Dartmouth during his freshman and sophomore years.

During this routine, his sister and cousin noticed a “lack of movement” by Ramsden and he was pulled from the water.

A member of the Dartmouth University men’s swimming team died Saturday afternoon after Sarasota police say he drowned in a YMCA pool. This event is almost impossible to comprehend, and he and his family are in our hearts.

Ramsden started swimming competitively at the club at the age of six, according to Morse.

His family is planning a memorial service for next weekend, to be held in Nashville. He was studying economics and interested in pursuing a career in finance, according to his student-athlete biography at the school website. He was expected to graduate in 2017.

“Members of the Ramsden family have been loyal volunteers with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville for years and we would like to express our honest condolences to the entire family at this time”, said Sherry Stinson, director of marketing and PR for Habitat of Greater Nashville.

Ramsden was the captain of the swim team at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashvile, The Dartmouth reports.

The 21-year-old is survived by his parents, Bruce and Amy Ramsden, and two siblings.
