Margaret Howe-White, nursing director of the Harrison-Clarksburg Health Department, said the virus can stay in the body long after traces of it in the blood are gone. DOH has already recommended that pregnant women not travel to any Zika-affected countries until after they deliver, he said.

But mosquitoes here are known carriers of other diseases seen each year in Tennessee, including West Nile Virus and La Crosse encephalitis.

One of the panel experts was Dr. Elizabeth Talbot, an associate professor specializing in infectious and tropical disease at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine and New Hampshire’s deputy state epidemiologist. “Workers should use sharps with engineered sharps injury protection to avoid sharps-related injuries”. The type of mosquito that carries the virus is not found in the area, Drummond said.”Where we have concern is people who travel”, she said.

“It’s clearly a very scary time”. “It’s all because of a mosquito bite or some other means of transmission, such as sexual contact, that has been done outside of Florida”. It can also be spread through sex. The HHS secretary will also host a roundtable at a Loíza health center to hear directly from women affected by the Zika virus.

The patient is a pregnant woman who recently traveled to San Francisco from Central America, the department said. “That’s one of the key questions we really want to answer”.

Mosquitoes don’t breed in flood waters.

“They’re saying flu-like symptoms”. “Expanding that at some point will be important for us to really have an early warning of whether or not we have these mosquitoes”. Officials also say to treat clothing with permethrin and to avoid perfumes, colognes and products with fragrances that might attract mosquitoes.

On its website, Xytex stated that it would reject donors who had travelled to countries where Zika was present within the last month, with men having to wait if they wished to donate sperm after travelling to affected areas.

She added that there have been eight cases where the virus had been sexually transmitted. “So it’s likely that they might not even know they had Zika but they might be contagious”.

“There needs to be more awareness, with public information making people aware that if they have travelled to Africa or Brazil and they are feeling unwell, they should come forward for help”. She said people should take the normal precautions as mosquito season nears.”Use spray that contains DEET and use it routinely during the day and evening”, she said.
