Police would not say whether this incident is related to the shooting of state worker Lara Sobel, who was gunned down outside City Place in Barre Friday afternoon around 5 p.m.

Vermont police are investigating three deaths at a home in Berlin.

Sobel had worked on a case in July involving Herring’s 9-year-old daughter, who is now in state custody, police told NBC affiliate WPTZ.

“The employees at DCF deal with the most challenging family situations that one can imagine”, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin said. The tragedy that has gripped our state over the past 20 hours is vast. Just 10 murders were reported in Vermont in 2013, the last year for which data was available, according to state records.

WCAX-TV reports that authorities say they found the bodies Saturday morning after concerned relatives called to say the people who lived in the home had not been heard from.

Her attacker, identified as Jody Herring, was tackled by people on the street and restrained until police arrived. In the coming days we will need to pull together as a state to come to terms with these heinous events. “It’s a large, extended family throughout central Vermont”, Scott said. “My thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ families and friends. I have contacted Gov. Shumlin and I am confident there will be a full investigation into what happened and why”.

Berlin police said it was premature to speculate on the victims’ cause of death. Motorcyclists planning to attend the Toy Run should know the route will be altered slightly, officials said.

More information may be released later Saturday.
